Salt Lake celebrates First Night

Salt Lake City wasn't sleeping last night.
To celebrate the birth of 2009, thousands of Utah residents crowded the usually sleepy downtown area to ring in the new year in the company of friends, family and fellow revelers. First Night, a festival celebrating the culture and community of downtown, connected the city via TRAX to events at The Gateway, Temple Square and the Gallivan Center. With warm drinks, music and dance, attendees welcomed 2009.
Evan Haslam, an architecture student at the University of Utah, described New Year's Eve as an opportunity to reflect on the important events that had transpired the previous year.
Jeremy Klehr, a resident of Salt Lake City, wants the new year to bring change, economically and politically, so the United States can get back on track and take care of its citizens again.
Jay Henderson, a singer with Band of Annuals which performed at the Gallivan Center, wants to continue not smoking.
Whatever 2009 will bring, Charlotte Frehner emphasized her hope that people use the new year as a starting point for goals and a chance to move forward.
"In the new year I want to get better grades," said Frehner, a first-year student in the U.'s architecture program. "Not that mine were bad last semester, but you can always try and do better."
For First Night, a group of U. architecture students created installation pieces to encourage viewers to question the definition, purpose and implementation of New Year's rituals. Using unread newspapers, salvaged lumber and recycled steel rods, Haslam's group created "Knock on Wood."
The works created by students were focused on sustainable living, and students were required to create them from at least 85 percent recycled or salvaged materials. Haslam hoped that his group's piece could inspire people to take care of the world.
"For the new year it's good to consider how to take care of the world," Haslam said. "It took a lot of junk to create these pieces."
Through the revelries and celebrations, most in attendance at First Night were focused on enjoying the moment. Across downtown, the energy made the city hum as people drifted between locations and filled the sidewalks.
Danica Fraley, an event coordinator with the Downtown Alliance for First Night, said that food, art and music can easily bring people together in celebration.
"First Night brings the communities of the state together because the theme is centered on everybody," Fraley said. " People can find something they can enjoy with activities from Latin dancing to ice skating. We've tried to create an event where any age can have fun in a safe, pleasant environment."
Live bands performed as artists painted behind them. Warming huts at The Gallivan Center hosted poetry reading, solo artists and dance performances. Outside there were fire dancers and free ice skating.
Fraley said First Night is an opportunity for people to become exposed to the life of downtown, its shops and its people.
"We wanted to have one night where people could come together, learn something and meet new people," Fraley said.
In attendance at the Joseph Smith Memorial building to hear Mama's Boys, a bluegrass folk group, was Pat Birrell, a resident of West Valley City. She said that she has always attended First Night to hear the music at Temple Square.
"To me the new year is the sun coming over the mountains to mark a fresh year to do the best we can with," Birrell said. "In 2009, I'll try to do things better than I did in 2008 and enjoy all the time I can with my family."

Merry Christmas 2008
Christmas came very fast for Dugan and I this year. We were super busy with school till the 20th so I only had 4 day's to get everything together. But don't you worry we did what we could and had a wonderful Christmas.
This is a little 18" tree that I made with my mom when I was 14. Trees are expensive and need to be decorated which require money and time. Which I didn't have either. My sister was not okay with me not having a tree so my mom brought me up this little tree that I use to put on my window seat in my bedroom when I was a teenager.
Dugan and I on Christmas at my Parents home. We had a wonderful Christmas.
We are So In LOVE!!!
We were able to give each other a few very nice gifts.

Friend of a Friend
I know there isn't much that we can do other then pray for this family but I felt since I actually know Heather I should post it. We actually know her because she is best friends with our friend Jim. I even got to hold that little baby boy and he is so sweet. This whole situation is so sad. I felt I need to Post something because I can't stop thinking about it.

BUSY, BUSY, BUSY
You know you are an architecture student when CONT.
...when you're being shown pictures of a trip, you ask what the human scale is.
...you can use Photoshop, Illustrator and make a web page, but you don't know how to use Excel.
...You refer to great architects (dead or alive) by their first name, as if you knew them. (Frank, Mies, Norman...)
...when fake light feels natural and daylight is an unusual experience
..you know the janitors by name.
...your roommates say "good morning," and you reply "good night."
...you carry a toothbrush in your backpack.
...someone asks you for your phone number and you give them the studios. ( There really is a phone and it rings when you call)
...you start paying rent for your desk space in studio.
...You total up 3 meals of the day to your breakfast.
...all of the Christmas gifts you give are wrapped in trace.
...you ask Santa Clause for architecture supplies. (Dear Santa Art Supplies is expensive)
...you ask Santa Clause for a sleeping bag.
...after all of your expenses, you can't afford to pay attention
... You know the different taste between UHU and Pritt glue
... You can stay alive without sunlight, communicate with people nor having food but you would commit suicide if the plotter (Printer) doesn't plot your work out
..You've lost your house key and u realized week later ( maybe not the house key but my car. I left my car parked down town for 2 nights before I realized it wasn't parked at my apartment.)
...u dance madly at 3 am though u aren't drunk
...you note smt with yr drafting pen or yoken
.. You are an expert and Photoshop, illustrator and auto cad
but u don't know how to use MS excel
...you spend more time in studio than in your own bed.
...your parents are complaining that you're not having enough fun.
...you only leave studio to buy supplies.

...upon hearing 'supermodel', you think of a nicely crafted-foam core model.

...you consider using broccoli for your models.
...you enjoy hanging out at 'Home and Garden Fair'.
...you know all the 24-hour food places in the area. --- (Dugan and I found out that Chili's is open till Midnight on Fri and Sat)

...the streetlights turn off.
..You consider 3AM an early night.
...when you are out at 3AM, and people know where you're at.
...everything you eat comes in single serving baggies.
...the idea of a 24 hour 'Kinko's' make's perfect sense

...the only building on campus with its lights on is your studios'.
...you say "It's only midnight- I have plenty of time to finish."
...you confuse sunrise with sunset.
...you ask what time it is, then ask "AM or PM?"
